Graduate Student Groups

With over 25,000 graduate students across four campuses and numerous off-campus sites, we know that we can’t reach everyone! That’s why the MGA offers a series of grants to graduate students who want to organise group events and activities that foster learning and community-building within and across programs. This is known as the MGA Graduate Student Group Grant Scheme.

The MGA Graduate Student Group Grant Scheme is divided up into four different areas:

Seminar Organiser Funding: For graduate students who want to put on a short seminar to showcase departmental work, invite a guest speaker, or host a networking event.

Conference Organiser Funding: For graduate students who are organising their departmental research conference.

Departmental Group Funding: For graduate student groups within a department, to run social events throughout the year for their cohort.

Special Interest Group Funding: For coursework graduate students who want to engage with others in their course and organise a social event, or for any graduate student wishing to run a special interest group event.

Important Notice

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the MGA has made the decision to temporarily freeze all funding under our Group Grant Funding schemes. This includes Departmental and Special Interest Group funding as well as Conference and Seminar Organisers funding.

We understand the importance of keeping your groups engaged with social activities during these unprecedented and isolating times and we will therefore be offering a MGA COVID-19 Virtual Activities grant of up to $100 per group for the purpose of running virtual social activities for your cohort and a MGA COVID-19 Virtual Conference grant of up to $100 per day for conferences to a maximum of $200.

Please take note that groups who have already received 2020 funding are excluded from applying this grant.

For groups that are eligible, you can apply for this funding by completing this application form. Please send your application to mga-gradgroups@monash.edu

If circumstances change and we can resume our usual Group Grants Funding schemes, you will be notified.

Departmental Group Funding

More information:

The Departmental Group funding scheme requires graduate students to sign an agreement to spend the funding only on events which fall within the Student Services and Amenities Fees (SSAF) regulations, within the year in which it is allocated. Funding will be provided as a lump sum donation to a departmental cost code, unless other arrangements are made.

Special Interest Group Funding

The MGA’s Special Interest group funding is designed for coursework graduate students with similar interests to come together and organise events. Funding is available to graduate students upon application for both one-off events and ongoing group activities.

More information:

Special Interest Group funding has a similar funding procedure to the Departmental Group funding. The initial group contact and consult can occur at any time during the year, and is not restricted to the funding round application dates. The initial consult and funding for the first event will be a trial of the viability of the group, or will result in a referral to an appropriate staff or committee member to help you plan your idea. Group funding allocation is at the discretion of the MGA, and is not guaranteed on submission of an expression of interest form.

Are you looking for goodie bags or door prizes for your event, seminar or conference?

From time to time, the MGA donates merchandise items for student-led events, seminars and conferences. Due to the high level of demand, the MGA can’t accommodate all requests, but if you put in your request at least 6 weeks in advance, we will endeavour to cater to your event. Donations are limited to one per graduate student group per year.

Sounds like something you need for your next event? Discuss your event details with mga-gradgroups@monash.edu
