Background

My name is Julie Dao and I am your new Clayton Campus Representative. I have just commenced my Doctor of Philosophy (Professional Development) in Physiology.

I am passionate about academic governance and the student experience as I understood from previous experience, the importance of student contribution and feedback in the continuous improvement of learning, teaching and the overall student experience. My previous roles at Monash include an Access Monash Ambassador, Dean’s Student Advisor, Disability Services Peer Mentor, Science Peer Mentor, Science Board of Studies and Learning and Teaching Committee Student Representative and a member of the Vice-Provost Student Reference Group. I am now on the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences’ Faculty Graduate Research Committee, a member of the PHDRS (Physiology HDR Student Group) and the Vice-President of Monash Young MedTech Innovators (MYMI).

I was interested in joining the MGA as my work prior was mainly in the undergraduate space. Since commencing my PhD, I have noticed a gap within the social and peer support aspects of the graduate student experience. This gap limits communication and support surrounding the challenging and rewarding aspects of independent research. I would like to address these issues which directly affect graduate students and work collaboratively within the MGA space and with Monash Staff in order to share knowledge with those who can address and prompt change relating to the amendments of the curriculum, teaching of courses and the Clayton student experience.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to contribute to and bring about change for the benefit of graduate students! I feel like I have a lot to offer the graduate student community as I am very enthusiastic and passionate about academic governance and enriching the student experience. I am a big believer in change starting off with great ideas and a community united by a shared purpose. I am looking forward to hearing from graduate students face-to-face or via email about any issues which directly affect graduate students. If you would like to chat about any issue you feel needs raising, please do not hesitate to contact me.
