As the Queer Officer, I represent, within the MGAEC and the broader university, all queer Monash graduate students. The word ‘queer’ is an umbrella term for everyone whose identity diverges from predominant sexes, genders, sexualities and/or romantic orientations. I’m an openly gay guy, and I’ve known this since I was around 21. All my life, I’ve lived my queerness with serenity, freedom and pride – a ‘favour’ I want to return to the queer community here at Monash.

I started my journey as the MGA Queer officer in mid-2018, with the hope of giving, to all LGBTIQA+ graduate students at Monash, the same safe, pleasant, fulfilling academic experience I’ve enjoyed in my life. Additionally, my PhD project, at Monash Art, Design and Architecture, is about university students’ collective social intelligence: being the Queer Officer, I can apply my know-how about building social wellbeing for the benefit of our queer community. My aim is for MGA Queer to create a rich, lively, thriving community made of queer graduate students and our precious allies. MGA Queer is based on five pillars: inclusivity, diversity, participation, exploration and conviviality. With the amazing support of the MGA staff, I ideate and organise a large variety of social, cultural and educational events addressing all the colours of the rainbow and all the letters of our LGBTIQA+ acronym. All events are also open to our amazing allies. Follow us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/MGAqueer

I still have so much to learn about diversity and inclusion, and I’m honoured to do this from this position of representation and responsibility.
