My name is Emily Pryor and I am your new Research Education Officer. I have commenced my PhD this year with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and I will return to finish my Doctor of Medicine degree after completing my PhD.
I was interested in joining the MGA because I found many of the administrative processes hard to navigate as a new PhD student, particularly in this COVID-19 environment. This pandemic has presented a unique academic and personal challenge for HDR students. Many students have had their research, personal and working lives significantly disrupted, and new students are struggling to engage with the HDR community, as some of them haven’t even had the opportunity to meet their colleagues in person. Research students are currently facing unprecedented challenges, and they need a strong student voice representing them.
This is my first term serving on the MGA’s executive committee and I am grateful for this opportunity. I hope to be a strong advocate for university support for graduate students, which is needed more than ever before. If you have any ideas or issues that you feel need raising, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Outside of research, I enjoy many outdoor activities. Some of these include kitesurfing, bouldering, snowboarding and hiking. I hope to see some of you on the trails and slopes after these lockdowns!
